Safety assessment

Edible

Based on reviewed safety sources.

The decolouring russula is a large orange-to-brick-red russula with pale gills, growing in dry pine and mixed forest. Its flesh changes colour to grey when cut, which helps separate it.

Identification

  • Cap orange-yellow to reddish-brown, often with a paler margin.
  • Flesh greys when cut; taste mild.

Safety first. This information is an educational reference, not a confirmation of an edible mushroom. Identifying fungi is difficult and mistakes can be dangerous. Never eat a mushroom unless you are completely certain of its identity, and consult a certified mycologist.
