Safety assessment

Poisonous

Based on reviewed safety sources.

The false panthercap is a large amanita with a grey-brown cap, white veil patches and a ring on the stem. It grows in mixed and coniferous forest and is considered poisonous or at least unsafe; it can be confused with the poisonous panthercap.

Identification

  • Cap grey-brown with white veil patches; stem ringed and with a bulbous base.
  • Differs from the panthercap by its weaker smell and paler margin; not edible either way.

Safety first. This information is an educational reference, not a confirmation of an edible mushroom. Identifying fungi is difficult and mistakes can be dangerous. Never eat a mushroom unless you are completely certain of its identity, and consult a certified mycologist.
