Horse Mushroom

Agaricus arvensis

EdibleMushroomAgaricusAgaricaceae

Safety assessment

Edible

Based on reviewed safety sources.

Larger than the field mushroom, with a white silky cap and a strong aniseed smell. A good edible — but it must be told apart from the yellow-staining, poisonous agarics.

Identification

  • Cap white and silky, often taking a yellowish tone with age.
  • Rubbing the stem base produces little or no bright yellow staining.

Safety first. This information is an educational reference, not a confirmation of an edible mushroom. Identifying fungi is difficult and mistakes can be dangerous. Never eat a mushroom unless you are completely certain of its identity, and consult a certified mycologist.
